Gliding inches above the water’s surface is one of the best ways to experience nature, completely undisturbed. Kayaking is not only relaxing; it also provides the type of exercise that leaves you feeling rejuvenated and relaxed. It’s no wonder it continues to rise in popularity, year after year.

The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) not only provides some of the best paddling locations in Eastern Ohio, but is also working to make the sport more accessible by installing kayak launches at Clendening and Piedmont Lakes.

A floating kayak launch provides stability when entering and exiting the water. The kayak is placed in the launch, paddlers climb aboard, slide over and drop the boat into the water, without getting wet.

The kayak launch at Piedmont Lake is on the courtesy dock, directly in front of the marina, located at 32281 Marina Road in Freeport, Ohio. Piedmont Lake, well known for musky fishing, offers 2,270 acres of calm water with a 10-horsepower limit for boaters.

The kayak launch at Clendening Lake is in the campground, not far from the marina located at 79100 Bose Rd in Freeport, Ohio. Clendening Lake is best known for its miles of undeveloped shoreline, saugeye fishing, and like Piedmont, a 10-horsepower limit for boaters keeps the water calm and peaceful.

Although these are the first two locations the MWCD has installed kayak launch ramps, additional ones are planned throughout the district soon. Stay tuned!
